CosmoCaixa Barcelona - August/Agosto 2016

The first Sunday of the month the entry to access the science museum in Barcelona, now known as CosmoCaixa, is free. The last time I visited this museum was many years ago and I wished to visit it after the reform of 2014. I remembered it as a fun museum where you could play with different experiments and time fly there, so after all this time, I decided to go with my mother.

As I live in a town near Barcelona, I had to take the bus, metro and Ferrocarrils Catalans de la Generalitat (FCG) to arrive to CosmoCaixa. It took us over an hour to arrive despite having caught transport with no waiting.

Just outside the FCG station I saw parked the Tramvia Blau (blue tram) and at that time passengers were taking it to enjoy the route.

El primer domingo de mes la entrada para acceder al museo de la ciencia de Barcelona, ahora llamado CosmoCaixa, es gratuito. Hacía muchos años que no iba a dicho museo y tenía ganas de volver a visitarlo después de la reforma del 2004. Lo recordaba como un museo divertido en el que podías jugar con distintos experimentos y el tiempo se pasaba volando, así que después de todo este tiempo, decidí volver a ir con mi madre.

Como vivo en una pequeña ciudad cerca de Barcelona, tuve que coger el autobús, metro y Ferrocarrils Catalans de la Generalitat (FCG) para poder llegar al CosmoCaixa. Tardamos más de una hora en llegar aún habiendo cogido el transporte sin esperas.

Nada más salir de la estación de los FCG vimos estacionado el Tramvia Blau (tranvía azul) y en ese momento estaban subiendo pasajeros para disfrutar de la ruta. 

I knew about the existence of this tram and I was curious to see it, so it was a nice surprise. The tram is from 1910 and is the only one remaining in Barcelona. Currently there are tramlines, but they are another public transport and therefore aren't of turistic interest.

Walking up the Avda. Del Tibidabo, uphill, we arrived to CosmoCaixa. It was several minutes walking and unshaded on both sides of the street, a burden. I don't like sun and to feel sun burning in your skin.

Sabía de la existencia de dicho tranvía y tenía curiosidad por verlo, así que fue una bonita sorpresa. El tranvía data del año 1910 y es el único que se conserva en Barcelona. Actualmente hay líneas de tranvía, pero son otro medio de transporte más y por lo tanto no son de interés turístico.

Subiendo la Avda. del Tibidabo, cuesta arriba, llegamos al CosmoCaixa. Fueron varios minutos andando y sin sombra a ambos lados de la calle, un agobio. No me gusta el sol y la sensación tan agobiante que da cuando da de lleno.

This submarine warns that the museum is a few meters away.

As we never went to the museum walking, instead of taking a more comfortable and short route, we down stairs entering a street in which we had to go up stairs and making an unnecessary detour.

Este submarino avisa que el museo está a pocos metros de distancia.

Como nunca habíamos ido andando hacia el museo, en lugar de coger un camino más cómodo y corto bajamos por unas escaleras, entrando en una calle por la que tuvimos que volver a subir más escaleras y así dando un rodeo innecesario.

The museum is located in a new bulding, although the old building is preserved and currently the cafeteria with terrace is there. 

El museo está localizado en un edificio nuevo, aunque han conservado el edificio antiguo y en el que actualmente está la cafetería con terraza.

Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein welcomed you upon entering the building. Many children wanted to take photos with them, despite they ignored the importance of these characters.

Charles Darwin y Albert Einstein te daban la bienvenida al entrar en el edificio. Muchos niños querían hacerse fotos con ellos, a pesar de desconocer la importancia de estos personajes.

Once inside the museum you begin to see interesting things. Here we have a real skull of a Triceratops. There were more bones, but I didn't take photos.

Ya dentro del museo se empiezan a ver cosas interesantes. Aquí tenemos un cráneo real de Triceratops. Habían más huesos, pero no hice fotos.

To access the bottom floor, which is the main one, you go down along a spiral ramp that represents the different eras of the earth. Along the way you find explanations of the origin of life along the years.

The tree is a an Acariquara, originating in Brazil. I had never seen anything like it and its roots were impressive.

At the end of the tour, you could see a piece of Antarctica, having these cute penguins welcoming visitors.

Para acceder a la planta inferior, que es la principal, hay que bajar por una rampa de caracol que representa las distintas eras de la tierra. Por el camino te ibas encontrando con explicaciones sobre el origen de la vida a lo largo de los años.

El árbol es un Acariquara, originario de Brasil. Jamás había visto algo semejante e impresionaban sus raíces.

Al llegar al final del recorrido, podías visitar un trocito de la Antártida, teniendo a estos simpáticos pingüinos recibiendo a los visitantes.

There was also a photographic exhibit. As an amateur photographer, I reveled with the beauty of the photographs in black and white.

También había una exposición fotográfica. Como aficionada a la fotografía, me deleité con la belleza de las fotografías en blanco y negro.

I liked to see that the pendulum-clock is still at the museum.

Me gustó ver que el reloj-péndulo sigue en el museo.

From here photos lose quality. The lighting was pretty bad and I chose to use the camera in automatic mode for not setting white balance and other things constantly manually (my camera is a bridge and has its limitations).

On the bottom floor are exposed all the experiments and permanent and temporary exhibitions.

A partir de aquí las fotos pierden calidad. La iluminación era bastante mala y opté por utilizar la cámara fotográfica en modo automático por no estar configurando el balance de blancos y demás constantemente de forma manual (mi cámara es una bridge y tiene sus limitaciones).

En la planta inferior están expuestos todos los experimentos y las exposiciones permanentes y temporales.

The room is quite large and has seating areas. The museum is so big that you can spend the whole day if you want to see everything well. That day there were not many people despite the free entry, so you could visit all without stress or crowds.

As you can see, kids have a lot of fun as they can run and play with everything without fear.

La sala es bastante grande y tiene zonas de descanso. El museo es tan grande que puedes pasar el día entero si quieres verlo todo bien. Ese día no había mucha gente a pesar de ser gratuito, así que podías visitarlo todo sin agobios ni aglomeraciones.

Como veis, los niños se lo pasan muy bien ya que pueden correr y tocarlo todo sin miedo.

I hardly took photos of the experiments and other exhibits because as you can see, the photos didn't turn out very well.

One of the exhibits is about human evolution. I only took photos of some of the actual size figures  exposed.

No hice apenas fotos a los experimentos y otros objetos expuestos porque como podéis comprobar, la fotos no salían bien.

Una de las exposiciones trata sobre la evolución humana. Solamente hice fotos a algunas de las figuras a tamaño real expuestas. 

One of the big attractions is the flooded forest. It's a replica of the Amazon rainforest where you can see both plants and animals. You can even feel the Amazonian temperature and humidity.

Uno de los grandes atractivos es el bosque inundado. Se trata de una réplica de la selva amazónica en la que puedes ver tanto plantas como animales. Incluso puedes sentir la temperatura y humedad ambiental amazónica.

Curiously, there was a sign that warned about not putting your hand into the water because carnivorous animals that inhabit there could see the fingers of your hands as succulent worms.

In my opinion, I will say that I don't like to see animals in captivity, I am against animal circuses and zoos as we know them. I was very sorry to see that capybara alone, although I ignore if there is another one. In favor, I will say that the area is wide and birds could move and fly freely. I even saw some nests in trees.

There were also other animals that I didn't photographed, like ants or poison dart frogs that I didn't see.

Como dato curioso, había un cartel que avisaba sobre no meter la mano dentro del agua porque habitan animales carnívoros que podrían ver los dedos de tus manos como suculentos gusanos.

A modo personal, diré que no me gusta ver animales en cautiverio, estoy en contra de los circos con animales y zoológicos tal y como los conocemos. Me dio mucha pena ver al capibara solo, aunque ignoro si hay alguno más. A favor diré que la zona es amplia y las aves podían moverse y volar con total libertad. Incluso vi algunos nidos en los árboles.

También habían otros animales que no fotografíé, como hormigas o ranas de flecha que no llegué a ver.

In the rest of floors are the planetarium, the garden with picnic and rooms for activities such as "¡Toca Toca!" (Touch Touch!) or "Click", geared for children. I didn't enter the planetarium due to lack of time.

And that was how I spent the afternoon. On the negative side, I will say that the museum disappointed me somewhat. Almost all experiments aren't as I remembered because in past it was you who pulled strings or gear wheels to run the experiments, now it's about pressing buttons, many of them broken. There are also too many videos to choose from, all digitized. For my taste, it has lost the essence of science museum and I missed many interesting and fun experiments. They also have many closed rooms and therefore, underused.

For people who have never been there, it may be a good visit if come from tourism to Barcelona. It's located in a remote area from the center of the city and not many tourists choose to visit the museum, so you can visit it quietly. If you advantage the first Sunday of the month, when the entry is free, it's a great way to spend the day as you can bring food and consume it in the picnic area.

En las siguientes plantas están el planetario, el jardín con pícnic y las salas para actividades como "¡Toca Toca!" o "Click", orientada para niños. No entré en el planetario por falta de tiempo.

Y así fue como pasé la tarde. Por el lado negativo, diré que el museo me decepcionó en cierto modo. Casi todos los experimentos no son como los recordaba ya que antes eras tú quien tiraba de las cuerdas o ruedas de engranajes para hacer funcionar los experimentos, ahora se trata de tocar botones, mucho de ellos rotos. También hay demasiados vídeos entre los que elegir, todo de forma digitalizada. Para mi gusto, ha perdido la esencia de museo de la ciencia y eché en falta muchos experimentos interesantes y divertidos. También tienen muchas salas cerradas y por lo tanto, desaprovechadas.

Para las personas que no han ido nunca, puede que sea una buena visita si vienen de turismo a Barcelona. Al estar ubicado en una zona alejada del centro de la ciudad y no muchos turistas deciden visitar el museo, así que se puede visitar tranquilamente. Si se aprovecha que el primer domingo de mes, cuando la entrada es gratuita, es una buena forma de pasar el día ya que puedes llevar comida y consumirla en la zona de picnic.  

Before taking the FCG back to the center of Barcelona, I took a photo of this building. Too bad the trees cover a large part of the facade.

The way back home was long, it took us an hour and a half to get home. It's the inconvenient of living in another town.

Antes de coger el FCG de vuelta al centro de Barcelona, hice una foto a este edificio. Lástima que los árboles tapen gran parte de la fachada.

El camino de vuelta a casa fue largo, finalmente tardamos una hora y media en llegar a casa. Es lo que tiene el vivir en otro pueblo.
