Sant Jordi 2016

Yesterday was the day of the book, or Sant Jordi, as known in Catalonia. Here is tradition to give a rose or a book and is a big celebration. Strolling through the center of Barcelona can turn into an adventure because of the agglomeration of people who are in some streets and even though I hate the crowds, I like to walk around Barcelona that day and I spent the afternoon there.

You can find book stalls and roses stalls in almost any corner and being the World Book Day, come many writers to sign their books. Out of curiosity, we approached to the booth in which Mario Vaquerizo, a Spanish singer, writer and other professions, was signing his books in Plaza Catalunya in front of Corte Ingles.

Ayer fue el día de libro, o Sant Jordi, como se conoce en Cataluña. Aquí es tradición regalar una rosa o un libro y se celebra por todo lo alto. Pasear por el centro de Barcelona se puede convertir en toda una aventura por la aglomeración de gente que hay en algunas calles y a pesar de que odio las aglomeraciones, me gusta pasear por Barcelona ese día y pasé la tarde por allí.

Te puedes encontrar con puestos de libros y rosas en casi cualquier esquina y al ser el día internacional del libro, vienen muchos escritores a firmar sus libros. Por curiosidad, nos acercamos al puesto en el que Mario Vaquerizo estuvo firmando sus libros, en Plaza Catalunya frente al Corte Inglés.

Then we went to Plaça de Sant Jaume (Sant Jaume Square). For that day there are booths where are sold roses, books and the typical donuts of Sant Jordi, but we did not buy anything.

In this square are located the City Hall of Barcelona and the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia).

Después nos fuimos a la Plaça de Sant Jaume, que para ese día ponen puestos donde venden rosas, libros y las típicas rosquillas de Sant Jordi, aunque no compramos nada.

En dicha plaza están ubicados el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona y el palacio de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

As you can see, the square was crowded. That day there are open doors in both buildings. We did not go to any, although we visited both a few years ago.

We decided to go along Carrer de Ferran to go to Las Ramblas.

Como habéis podido comprobar, la plaza estaba abarrotada de gente. Ese día hay puertas abiertas en ambos edificios. No entramos a ninguno, aunque hace unos años visitamos ambos.

Decidimos ir por el Carrer de Ferran para ir a las Ramblas.

Traffic to vehicles was closed so people could walk in the middle of the street. As you can see in the photos, it was completely crowded and there were some stalls selling roses.

Las Ramblas was also closed to vehicles to give priority to pedestrians because it already is a busy street and a day like that would be completely impossible to walk.

Cortaron el paso a vehículos para que pudiesen pasear las personas. Como podéis ver en las fotos, estaba completamente abarrotada y habían algunos puestos de venta de rosas.

En las Ramblas también cerraron el paso a los vehículos para dar prioridad a los peatones porque ya de por sí es una calle muy concurrida y un día como ese sería completamente imposible andar.

Finally I did not buy any book, but at least I had fun that day in Barcelona. Another day I go to the city again, I will take photos of the same places so you can see how they are without that crowd.

In Las Ramblas I saw some posters dedicated to Sant Jordi that I found cute devoted to books and the legend of Saint George. I show you.

Finalmente no compré ningún libro, pero al menos me entretuve ese día por Barcelona. Otro día que vuelva a la ciudad, haré fotos de los mismos sitios para que veáis cómo son sin tanta gente.

Por Las Ramblas vi unos carteles dedicados a Sant Jordi que me hiceron mucha gracia dedicados a los libros y la leyenda de Sant Jordi. Os los muestro.

And from there we took the road to catch the bus back home. In Las Ramblas, next to the building of the Delegation of defense, there are two anchors and I took photos that day.

Y de allí cogimos el camino para coger el autobús de vuelta a casa. En las Ramblas, junto al edificio de la delegación de defensa, hay dos anclas y ese día hice unas fotos.

Also I took a photo of the medieval walls of St. Matrona, in Avinguda del Paral.lel.

También hice una foto de la muralla medieval de Santa Matrona, en la Avinguda del Paral.lel. 

I was lucky to take the photo while seagulls were flying around.

I saw two cats in the moat of the wall. I had to use the zoom to take the photos this is what I got.

Tuve suerte de poder hacer la foto mientras pasaban unas gaviotas volando.

Vi dos gatos en el foso de la muralla. Tuve que utilizar el zoom para hacerles fotos y esto fue lo que conseguí.

A pity that in the second photo a piece of wall is seen, but at least I managed to photograph the front face of the cat.

And here my afternoon in Barcelona the day of Sant Jordi. For next year I will go along Paseo de Gracia, which did not give us time to go and generally symbolical buildings are decorated.

Anecdotally, even though the weather was good and it was hot, just when we were going to catch the bus it started to rain and the temperature went down.

Una pena que en la segunda foto se vean las paredes, aunque al menos conseguí fotografiar la carita del gato de frente.

Y hasta aquí mi tarde por Barcelona el día de Sant Jordi. Para el próximo año iré por el Paseo de Gracia, que no nos dio tiempo ir y suelen decorar los edificios emblemáticos.

Como anécdota, a pesar de que hizo buen tiempo y hacía calor, justo cuando íbamos a coger el autobús empezó a llover y bajó bastante la temperatura.
