Aircraft spotting

One of my hobbies is aircraft spotting. The question is, what is spotting? Basically it is the observation and registration of vehicles such as airplanes, automobiles, ships or trains, both in written and photographic mode. In my case, I am an airplane spotter.

I live very close to the Josep Tarradellas - Barcelona-El Prat airport, so for years I have liked to go and see and photograph airplanes, although it was not until last year that I began to take myself more seriously by making a record of the airplanes I photograph. . Until then I had only photographed planes sporadically without registering them, as in this entry: click here.

I have taken some photos so that you understand a little better the hobby and the places where I usually go to photograph planes.

Uno de mis hobbies es el spotting. La pregunta es, ¿qué es el spotting? Básicamente es la observación y el registro de vehículos como aviones, automóviles, barcos o trenes tanto en modo escrito como fotográfico. En mi caso, soy spotter (observador) de aviones.

Vivo muy cerca del aeropuerto Josep Tarradellas - Barcelona-El Prat, así que desde hace años que me gusta ir a observar y fotografiar aviones, aunque no fue hasta el pasado año cuando empecé a tomármelo más en serio haciendo un registro de los aviones que fotografío. Hasta entonces solo había fotografiado algún que otro avión de forma esporádica sin registrar, como en esta entrada: pincha aquí.

He hecho unas fotos para que entendáis un poco mejor el hobby y los lugares donde suelo ir a fotografiar aviones.

One of the most popular spots is the viewpoint for planes, which is in front of runway 25R of the airport and where there are around twenty cement benches. From this point you can see the planes on their final approach before landing. You can take photos quite interesting of the bellies  and on weekends it's usually crowded.

Uno de los puntos más populares es el mirador de aviones, que está frente a la pista 25R del aeropuerto y en el que hay una veintena de bancos de cemento. Desde este punto puedes ver los aviones en su trayecto final antes de aterrizar. Se pueden hacer fotos de las panzas bastante interesantes y los fines de semana suele estar lleno de gente.

A few meters from the cement banks is the mound. The airstrip can be seen perfectly and beautiful photos of the planes at sunset can be taken on winter evenings. From this place the planes are seen in their profile.

A pocos metros de los bancos de cementos está el montículo. Se puede ver perfectamente la pista de aterrizaje y en los atardeceres de invierno se pueden hacer fotos preciosas de los aviones en la puesta de sol. Desde este lugar los aviones se ven de perfil.

These information panels are next to the cement banks. They explain (in Catalan) what spotting is and what are the best places to practice it, although there are many others from which to photograph planes and they are not marked on the map.

Estos paneles informativos están junto a los bancos de cemento. Te explican (en catalán) qué es el spotting y cuáles son los mejores lugares para practicarlo, aunque hay muchos otros desde donde poder fotografiar aviones y no están marcados en el mapa.

If we walk along the beach path towards the sea, we find the spotter platform. From it you can perfectly see the landings of the planes.

Both photos have been taken with a Redmi Note 7 smartphone. The normal thing is to use a camera (no matter if compact, bridge or DSLR) that has a minimum 70-200mm lens. I used an 18-55m lens for a long time and that limited me quite a bit until in January of this year I was able to get a 16-300mm lens.

There are several applications and web pages for real-time aircraft tracking, normally Flightradar24 is used. I also use Planespotters.net or jetphotos.com to find the information that Flightradar24 has hidden if you don't have a subscription, which I don't have.

To find all the information of an airplane, just by knowing the registration you can easily find it through the pages mentioned.

Si andamos por el camino de la playa dirección mar, nos encontraremos con la plataforma de spotting. Desde ella se pueden ver perfectamente los aterrizajes de los aviones.

Ambas fotos están hechas con un smartphone Redmi Note 7. Lo normal es utilizar una cámara (no importa si es compacta, bridge o réflex) que tenga un objetivo 70-200mm como mínimo. Durante bastante tiempo usé un objetivo 18-55m y eso me limitó bastante hasta que en enero de este año pude conseguir un objetivo 16-300mm.

Hay varias aplicaciones y páginas web para el seguimiento de aviones en tiempo real, normalmente se utiliza Flightradar24. También uso Planespotters.net o jetphotos.com para buscar la información que Flightradar24 tiene oculta si no tienes una suscripción, cosa que no tengo.

Para encontrar toda la información de un avión, solo con saber el registro la puedes encontrar fácilmente a través de las páginas que he mencionado.

Next to the platform there are two information panels. In the first one it inform about places of interest to visit in the Llobregat Delta, as there is plenty of nature around the airport. In the second panel you can see a sample of the planes that usually visit Barcelona. The 5th plane in the first row with the name deleted is the Airbus A380.

I have hundreds of photographs of planes that I would like to share on the blog, so I will upload them little by little.

Junto a la plataforma hay dos paneles informativos. En el primero te muestra lugares de interés para visitar en el Delta del Llobregat ya que hay bastante naturaleza alrededor del aeropuerto. En el segundo panel podéis ver una muestra de los aviones que suelen visitar Barcelona. El 5º avión de la primera fila que tiene el nombre borrado es el Airbus A380.

Tengo cientos de fotografías de aviones que me gustaría compartir en el blog, así que poco a poco las iré subiendo.
